Na manhã do dia 5 de Outubro de 1910 foi proclamada a República, pondo assim fim à Monarquia que, em Portugal, durou quase oito séculos.
A bandeira republicana foi hasteada na Madeira na fortaleza de S. Lourenço às 15:45 pela comissão municipal republicana, tocando a filarmónica o novo hino nacional.
Após a proclamação da República foi criado um governo provisório presidido pelo Dr. Teófilo Braga, que governou Portugal até ser eleito o primeiro Presidente da República, em Agosto de 1911. O primeiro presidente eleito foi o Dr. Manuel de Arriaga.
O governo provisório tomou várias medidas:
- adoptou-se uma nova bandeira;
- criou-se um novo hino nacional;
- a moeda passou a ser o escudo em vez do real.
